What you need to know about the Advanced Open Water Course
The PADI Advanced Open Water Course is the next step after the entry-level Open Water course. The emphasis of the course is to enable the new diver to continue to experience many of the different types of diving whilst taking the focus off themselves. The philosophy behind the course is that in the Open Water divers learn "How to dive" and during the advanced gain confidence by focusing on areas of diving they are interested in and might like to pursue further.
The course consists of home learning; reading a chapter in a book or completing e-learning module relevant to the dive you have chosen. Then prior to the dive your Instructor will give you a short talk offering tips and techniques, & safety considerations before leading the dive and assigning tasks to complete. All dives are under the supervision of an Instructor.
The course consists of 5 open water dives. 2 which you have to complete and are called "Core Dives" and 3 "Elective Dives" which can be chosen from over 25 PADI speciality courses. The Core Dives are 1. Navigation & 2. Deep.
Examples of the 3 dives Elective Dives include; Shark, Night, Underwater, Naturalist, Boat, Drift, Dry Suit, Enriched Air, Fish Identification, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Search & Recovery & Wreck.
As an Advanced Open Water Diver, you will get a new certification card and be allowed to dive to a depth of 40 meters (recommended only 30 meters) or 21 meters if you are a Junior Advanced Open Water Diver (automatically upgraded to 40 meters on 15th Birthday at PADI HQ).
